The Mayan Ruins Show A Great Civilization
The Mayan civilization flourished in areas that are today part of Belize, Guatemala, Mexico and Honduras for nearly a thousand years beginning from around 500 B.C. The Mayan ruins as we see them now consist of structures and cultural activity areas that still stand just as impressively as they have for over 2000 years. All these extraordinary creations were abandoned for some mysterious reason and were rapidly swallowed up by the rain forests right up until their discoveries by archeologists and explorers in more modern times.
Most of these structures consist of huge pyramids and temples and are magnificently carved and give the sense of a very sophisticated culture. They also exhibit some very distinct knowledge of astronomy and mathematics which reveals the high intellectual capacity of this culture.
Probably the most famous of the Mayan ruins is Chichen Itza in Mexico. This particular site is quite populated with structures and human skeletons were found here that seemed to be a sacrifice to gods. Artifacts that consist of idols, jewelry and jade have also been identified. The Ball Court, a spot where a few sports appear to have taken place, is known for its acoustics that allow individuals located hundreds of feet away to listen to conversations taking place in a normal voice.
Copan in Honduras is another place exhibiting Mayan ruins. The sculptures found here offer interesting viewing. Belize contains the Mayan ruins of Caracol, formerly one of the largest Mayan cities. It has a very massive pyramid, which still dwarfs all the other buildings in Belize. The Guatemalan site of Tikal is distinct from the other ruins and is located deep inside really dense jungles. You'll find a lot of pyramids and plazas here and moving from one to another is all the more impressive because of the extensive cover supplied by the rain forest. There are in addition quite a few other ruins dotted across the general areas of those countries, each of which has its own particular tourist attraction.
The Mayan society was never one which was unified and had quite a few states each dominated by its own sacred lords. They were all linked with one another by military alliances, trade, common rituals and probably some kinship. Every city considered itself a superpower but there is signs that quite a few the cities were abandoned and the residents moved to other areas.
Chichen Itza in Mexico is the city which was among the last to be established and displays indications of quite hybrid communities, as opposed to other cities which continued to have pure Mayan backgrounds. Chichen Itza was discovered only during the 1920s. All these Mayan ruin locations can be very easily accessed by visitors.
