Bad Breath Detector: Do They Help?

I regularly get correspondence from readers asking me if bad breath detectors truly work. They often want to know if I think they are a good idea.

First off, you might be wondering what a bad breath detector is - and what it does.

The most common bad breath detectors are designed as hand held devices that you can breathe into and then it measures your breath odor. Once the measurement is made, a light will light up if there is an issue.

When you use it, depending upon the model --- you will, ordinarily, get unique colored lights that purport different things. Obviously a red light means BAD - a green light means GOOD, and there could even be yellow and orange lights signaling borderline types of breath detected.

What's in them to allow them to do this? I'm afraid I haven't a clue. Unless you are a chemical engineer, you probably don't really care how they work. Just as long as they do.

How much do they cost? Typically around $20. Some are more expensive and may cost $60, but usually those may also have a built in breathalyzer to measure a person's alcohol level.

Do I think you should you buy one?

I guess that depends. If $20 won't break you, and the bad breath detector gives you peace of mind - then sure. Why not?

Just keep in mind, there is an easy breath test you can perform by breathing onto the the back of either hand and sniffing. Another way is to sniff your wrist after you lightly lick it.

These two tests should be able to tell you if your breath needs attention. The first one is for general bad breath, the second test is designed to pinpoint bad breath caused by saliva, which is not as common.

More importantly, I think, is to ask yourself what steps you are taking to prevent foul breath odor? You must understand your fundamental bad breath cause.

Not everyone is aware that, commercial made mouth rinse formulas contain alcohol, which is not good!

Alcohol tends to dry the mouth, and dry mouth means a lack of healthy saliva which is necessary for fresh breath. Alcohol is not an effective bad breath remedy.

When I was doing research for my book, The Bad Breath Treatment Guide, I found out that bad breath for most folks is induced by one of these components:

Foods that are Eaten

Improper Dental Procedures

Dry Mouth

Dieting Extremes

Nose & Throat Infections

Tension

What's more, in a fraction of the cases, bad breath can be created by serious medical conditions.

The best bad breath treatment is a natural home remedy that really works.
